An analysis of a student paper with unf writes rubrics

An analysis of a student paper with unf writes rubrics Analyzing papers with UNF Writes Rubrics set a very clear guideline for writing a paper. The rubrics include logic, mechanics(grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling), rhetorical awareness, and plain English style. After assessing a student paper based on these Rubrics it is apparent how well a paper or even how poorly a paper is written. The rubrics rate the essays on level of expertise, ranging from professional to unacceptable. Included in the levels are expert, skilled craftsperson, craftsperson and apprentice. This student paper, based on the UNF Writes Rubrics score, earns the grade of a C; the author reinforces the prompt and main idea but loses the audience in style and logic. The student essay prompt stated to relate an epigraph or short quotation from Dr. Kimball’s essay to the student reading of the text. This student emphasized the idea of â€Å"self-talk† and a quote by Judith Butler. By stating this quote in the first paragraph the student leads the audience to think this is the topic essay, but instead loses track of this idea by the end of the second paragraph. In the second and third paragraphs the author writes about how self talk forms and changes a persons personality while in the opening paragraph the main idea is the â€Å"I† and where it comes from. By opening up more topics to the reader the authors logic received a two out of four, or apprentice craftsperson on the UNF Writes Rubric scale. According to the Self-Talk Rubric:Logic (Logical Coherence and Development), the essay logically connects some of the ideas to the thesis and uses transitional words. The essay does logically connect back to the original thesis by r epeating the thought of the ‘I’ but the sentences are not cohesive with one another. The paper changes topics from sentence to sentence without bringing the old information back up. The lack of coherence and loss of focus equally decreased the writers grade on the logic portion. Using the prompt of the essay the author chose the epigraph from Judith Butler about the story of the â€Å"I† to relate to the entire article. Using this prompt the student should have written about this quote to explain to the audience how it relates, instead the student loses the prompt in the second and third paragraphs by writing about other short stories such as an infant crawling away turning into a person that loves to travel. By the author writing about other epigraphs off topic from the original, the audience is left confused on the main idea. The author receives a Rhetorical Awareness grade of a two out of four. A two out of four on the Self-Talk Rubric: Rhetorical Awareness states the writing addresses the assignment prompt and audience expectations with minor exceptions. By the end of the paper the audience knows about the ‘I’ and the idea of self-talk but not exactly how they relate or which one is the main idea. As for writing style in sentences, diction and tone the writer receives a UNF Writes Rubric score of two out of six, or apprentice craftsperson. This grade means the writing exhibits minor problems in sentences, diction and tone, and the language does not adhere to plain english standards. For example the student writes in first person throughout the paper, using words such as us, we, you and our. Along with the overuse of the first person the text has an unprofessional tone, using words such as ‘goes’ to explain what a quote said. In addition to the first person narrative and lack of professional tone the sentences are simplistic, all of these factors come together as work of an apprentice craftsperson. For the fourth rubric on mechanics, which includes grammar, syntax, punctuation and spelling, the writer maintained a three out of six or a craftsperson. This means the writer was able to only have around two mechanics error on the page. The errors found were the use of sentence fragments in the first paragraph and wrong use of punctuation in the last. These errors do not affect the grade as much as the other rubrics because mechanics is weighed the least. The author earned a C according to UNF Writes Rubrics on logic, rhetorical awareness, style and mechanics. The rubrics were weighed as the following: logic 30%, rhetorical awareness 30%, style 25% and mechanics 15%. From these weightings and the aforementioned level of expertise the student writes at a craftsperson level and received an average grade because of it.

Technopaegnia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Technopaegnia - Essay Example Opatianus’s work inspired Hrabanus Maurus (c 784-856), Archbishop of Mainz, a Carolingian poet and theologian. His famous work, In Praise of the Holy Cross was the first printed figure poem which was published in 1503. Visual poetry, as is obvious from the nomenclature, is the arrangement of text, images and symbols to convey the intended message of the work. It speaks silently. It is often referred to as the concrete poetry, but views differ on this issue. Concrete poetry is clearly recognizable as poetry, it has purely typographic elements; visual poetry is dependent on the texts on a minimal scale. Texts relate to visual function only. Non-text imagery has the main role. â€Å"For various reasons, the critical response to visual poetry over the years has been disappointing. Although the genre has a long and varied history, from the technopaegnia, of the ancient Greeks to the latest experiments with concrete poetry, it has received relatively little attention until recently.†(Neohelicon, 1990) When we mention technopaegnia, in the renaissance, Fortunius Licetus (1577-164) figures first. He was an Italian humanist. He edited many volumes on the classical writers and his contemporary, a Hungarian writer; Albert Molnar (1574-1634) translated Psalms in Hungarian language. His work, Lusus poetici, Games of the poets (1614), an anthology of Latin technopaegnia is well-known in this genre. A poem is supposed to be ‘the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.’ The visual poem is the outward manifestation of the joyous expression of the inner world of the poet. It pictures the trials, tribulations, the joy, the duty and beauty of life through the various forms and moods of Nature. The ideas which apparently look silly are given life and color and one enjoys their simplicity. Bohn writes, â€Å"Thus the visual poem claims to abolish playfully the oldest oppositions of our alphabetic

Major Themes in Steinbecks Of Mice and Men :: Steinbeck Of Mice and Men Essays

Major Themes in Of Mice and Men  Ã‚      The theme of loneliness is manifested many times in the work, Of Mice and Men and is often the dominant theme. This theme occurs during many circumstances but is not present from start to finish. In my mind for a theme to be pervasive is must be present during every element of the story. There are many themes that are present most of the way through such as sacrifice, friendship and comradship. But in my opinion there is only one theme that is present from beginning to end, this theme is pursuit of dreams. There are many characters where lonliness is evident throughout parts or all of their life. But all of these characters who appear to be lonely only tend to play a minor role in the story. This is not to say that they are insignificant but they help to convey the feelings and emotions that surround the major characters rather than their own. Characters like Curley's wife and Crooks are unmistakably lonely, but they show how their lonliness is the opposite of the two main characters, George and Lennie. Crooks actually states that George and Lennie have got each other but he hasn't got anyone. Curley's wife portrays the same message but under different circumstances. There are really no other main characters besides George and Lennie. From reading the novel and watching the film it is clearly evident in most cases that all of the support characters appear to be lonely. Therefore lonliness is quite a strong and influential theme in the story but it only features as a bakground theme and is not always present at critical stages. Themes such as sacrifice, comradship and freindship feature under very similar circumstances as lonliness but are also evident within the main characters. Candy made a sacrifice when he decided to have his ageing debilitated dog killed. But afterwards he regreted not having killed the dog himself, possibly having killed it at all. Just as when George killed Lennie, he knew it had to be done but he just kept making up excuses to avoid the inevitable. George made that sacrifice but unlike Candy he knew that if Lennie was to be killed he had to do it himself. The issue is morals, if there is such a thing as a moraly correct way to kill somebody thats how George did it, because during that time period in America there was not the resources nor facilities to deal with characters such as Lennie so drastic measures had to be taken.

Evolution of Musical Theatre

Lillian Davila   12858751064260 Evolution of Musical Theatre Lillian Davila Mr.ThoenPeriod two3 March 2018Evolution of Musical TheatreIn the musical Pippin, the main character, Pippin sang in Corner of the Sky, â€Å"Everything has its seasons, everything has its time.† This line explains that things are constantly changing. Musical theatre has evolved over the years musically, in the plot, and the setting of the plays. Over time, the music in musical theatre has shifted from a narrow to a broader focus. During the 5th century B.C. in Ancient Greece, early musical theatre first started with an all men cast and chorus. They would sing more focused songs to the gods and perform to express their ideas (University Press Inc.). But over the years different genres of music have been introduced into musical theatre, such as jazz and rock and roll (BeHappy/ Magioery). This brought a younger audience that could enjoy the music that would convey a broader message, making musical theatre more popular. Throughout the years the plot in musical theatre developed from a weak to a stronger storyline. The early stages of musical theatre would play music that would be irrelevant to the plot of the musical, and the storyline would not have a strong structure of the rising action, climax, and falling action. For example, comedy was opinionated humor that would have random funny actions with negative music (Magiorey/UPI). Eventually, the stories started addressing the social issues of the time period with a stronger story plot. For example in the musical, Hair the main idea of the show was to express how the hippies felt about the Vietnam War and how they wanted peace (FoxFace20/Magiorey). The stories include a more vivid plot that is interesting with more opinions and responses of social issues such as gender, race equality, and peace. Over the years, the setting in musical theatre has changed from outdoor to indoor performances. At first, the setting of the shows took place in open outdoor courtyards in Athens, Greece. Later, theatre was taken to Rome where the performances took place in the church. Shortly after, it became separate from the church, because the performers would mock the church (UPI/FoxFace20/Magiorey). After the 18th century, opera houses and theatres were built allowing for indoors stages with lighting effects and props (FoxFace20). Thus, there is a separate place dedicated for people to come and enjoy theatrical performances. To summarize, the music, the plot, and the setting of musical theatre has evolved allowing people to experience more vivid stories and hear a clearer point of view on issues of the time. It has transformed from a narrow focused weak plot, and outdoor setting, to a broader focus strong plot, and indoor setting. This change has been rapidly growing year after year and will continue into the future. As in the Broadway musical, Waitress, â€Å"Everything changes†.

Corporate Citizenship Audit - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1324 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2019/04/12 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Citizenship Essay Did you like this example? Teslas CEO Elon Musk has recently made a tweet suggesting that he was taking the company private once stock hit $420 per share. This has caused uproar with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The central concern for the SEC is that Musk made it seem like he already had the money lined up and the price confirmed, with a shareholder vote being the only thing standing between him and privatizing Tesla. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Corporate Citizenship Audit" essay for you Create order (Irfan 2018). Since this tweet has caused so many issues, Musk has tried to backtrack but people are not letting it go. The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation and the SEC has now filed a suit against Musk. The SEC has gone through all of the aspects of this scandal including Musk taunting short sellers of companys stock months before the tweet was written. Because of this and many other bizarre turns the SEC has decided that Musk should be fined and banned from serving as an executive or board member of any public company. The main concern with Musks tweet is that he already had everything set up to privatize the company. But this was not the case, few other people knew about the idea, no funding was guaranteed, and prices were not finalized. So Musk made this tweet without any evidence to back it up. This caused uproar for all investors and stakeholders for no reason. Corporate social responsibility is defined as the conscious effort to operate in a manner that balances stakeholder interests. (Lussier 2018). Teslas mission is to accelerate the worlds transition to sustainable energy. (Tesla 2018). Telsa is socially responsible because it focuses on their mission and tries to make the world a better place. On the corporate citizenship scale Tesla would be rated Level 5: Altruistic. Teslas primary corporate mission is focused on creating a better environment. They align all their products to fulfill their mission which is about creating a better environment. Tesla also tailors their marketing and communication towards their environmental protection efforts. Tesla, Inc. addresses stakeholders interests through a corporate social responsibility strategy that focuses on sustainability and environmental friendliness of automotive, energy storage, and energy generation products. (Greenspan 2018). By having this approach, Teslas stakeholders are benefitti ng and their brand image is improving. When the stakeholders benefit, Telsa benefits because the happier they are with the company the more they will put into the company. Teslas main stakeholders, in order of importance, include: communities (highest priority), customers, employees, investors/shareholders and governments. Tesla and communities directly benefit from each other. Communities benefit through development strategies that are made with Teslas cutting edge technology. Tesla benefits from satisfying community needs because it boosts their image. Customers are a direct influence on Teslas revenues so the company works towards creating a better quality product at a better price. Since these consumers have such a direct influence on the company, Tesla gears their corporate social responsibility efforts toward the needs on customers, such as minimizing costs and improving accessibility such as adding more charging stations. Employees are important to Telsa because they directly influence productivity and the companys performance. Tesla then compensates their employees by offering high compensation and offering new career opportunities. Investors and Shareholders are obvious stakeholders of the company because their funds directly helped the company. These investors and shareholders are interested in the profitability and growth of the company. Tesla uses corporate social responsibility to work towards these interests and aims to transform energy and a utomotive business. The environmentally friendly ideals in their corporate citizenship approach is in line with the current trend of being green. This makes Tesla more appealing to green consumers which in turn makes the investors and shareholders more profitable. The government is concerned with Teslas legal compliance and their contribution to economic growth. Being corporately responsible not only benefits citizens and stakeholders but it benefits Tesla themselves. The benefits that come with being socially responsible are: enhanced reputation, customer loyalty, better employee relations, and awards. (Lussier 2018). So Telsa and the stakeholders both have many reasons to be socially responsible. Elon Musks tweet caused problems that are relevant in the economic and social spheres. By stating that the company would be going private once stocks hit $420 per share, Musk caused trading fever. The tweet pushed Teslas stock price up 6% and Teslas trading needed to be halted for an hour and a half until Tesla gave a formal statement. The companys stock price closed at $379.57 on the day of the tweet. (Irfan 2018). The tweet also caused social problems because it makes Tesla seem unreliable. Musk tweeted based off assumptions and contrary to facts that he was aware of. The tweet made it seem like Musk had all funding secured and he was only waiting on a shareholder vote when in fact nothing had been discussed. This impacted Teslas stakeholders. Employees were impacted by this tweet because they were not aware of what was happening and thought that the company was making decisions without first informing them. Also, the tweet caused charges against Tesla which may impact the employee s bonuses and might even cause a few to be laid off. Investors and stockholders were impacted by this tweet because the company they put their money into was changing without their consent. The tweet came as a shock to them because no definite plans of going private were discussed. The government was also impacted by Musks tweet. Governments are interested in the legal compliance of companies and their contribution to economic growth, Musks tweet went against both these interests. The tweet was illegal because companies and executives are not allowed to provide inaccurate information to shareholders about major corporate events. Also, the tweet caused an increase in Teslas stock price and had trading halted for 90 minutes which impacts economic growth. I believe this scandal happened because Musk has never been reprimanded for his actions. Musk accused a British cave diver of being a child abuser with no evidence to back up his statement. The diver, Vernon Unsworth, aided the rescue of 12 teenagers in Thailand from a flooded cave. In July he deleted the tweets but last week he appeared to repeat his allegation, tweeting that it was strange he hasnt sued me after Mr. Unsworth said he was considering legal action. (BBC 2018). This gave the diver a bad reputation based on crimes he did not commit. During a Joe Rogan podcast, Musk smoked weed and drank whiskey and this added to previous concerns about his drug use. This also angered Tesla employees who are subject to drug testing. This showed lower Tesla employees that they are held to a higher standard than Tesla executives. Even though Musk has engaged in these behaviors Tesla has not let go of him. They think that by letting go of Musk, they will lose some of their following. The cu lt of Elon Musk and the belief among many of the entrepreneurs fans that he is a genius who alone can lead Tesla has allowed him to keep a tight grip on the electric car company. Many investors are in Tesla because they believe in Musk, and if he were to exit, its unclear what might happen to its stock price. (Stewart 2018). So they believe having Musk, even with all of his antics, is more important than the trouble he causes the company. I believe that if Tesla punished Musk for his actions he would be more likely to change his behavior. He should be suspended from his company for a period of time or given a large fine. Also, a contract should be put in place limiting what he is allowed to discuss to the public. This way, he cannot leak any premature information and the company can be saved from fines and from legal action. This recommendation is relevant and effective because it will help keep him from damaging the brand further but the company can still keep him for the good publicity that he brings.
